Hypnotherapy, simply put, is about putting you into a very relaxed state, which makes you open to positive suggestion. You are aware, yet rested, and a Hypnotherapist can never make you do things that you don't want to do, despite what you might have seen on television or in the movies!
A lot of people come to Hypnotherapy as a ‘last resort' having tried traditional therapies, counselling or even prescription medication. The fact is, that the ability to heal, lies within your own mind and I firmly believe that Hypnosis should be the first port of call for people struggling with anything in their life, whether it be self-confidence, low self-esteem, anxiety, stress, weight management, phobias, quitting bad habits etc. Hypnosis brings about the realisation that you can heal yourself and strengthens that belief and provides you with the tools, ability and mindset to move forward with your life, regardless of what you may be struggling with.

Brain Waves

There are 4 main types of brain waves, varying in frequency, the fastest is beta and the slowest are known as delta waves.
Beta Waves (12.5 to 30 cycles per second)
Beta are states associated with normal waking consciousness. When you are working, engaged in conversations and focused then these are the characteristics of a Beta state.
Alpha Waves (7.5 – 12.5 cycles per second)
These are obviously slower than Beta waves, for example when you are having a guided meditation, in a state of flow at times of creativity or simply resting after a task or activity. Meditation masters produce noticeably more alphas waves during meditation. Research has shown that by increasing synchronous alpha wave activity, this can help with physical as well as emotional pain, relief from stress and anxiety.
Theta Waves (4 – 8 cycles per second)
When you are dreaming and in a deeper meditative state, this is when Theta waves are present and are associated with a tremendous state of calm and medium to deeper hypnosis. Often, when you are daydreaming, having a soak in a bath or simply losing yourself in a well known task, this state is active. They are also associated with our subconscious mind where you hold all your past experiences, beliefs, thoughts and behavioural patterns.
Delta Waves (1 to 4 cycles per second)
This is a state of detached awareness and sleep, very deep hypnosis and when you are in your slowest, deepest state of rest. As you go to sleep, you go from beta-alpha-theta-delta and in reverse when you awaken. Most hypnosis is performs in the alpha and theta states.

Auto-Pilot

The subconscious mind keeps all your involuntary bodily functions going and also stores everything you have experienced and learnt in your life. To use a simple example, when you first learned to ride a bike you may have had assistance from one of your parents with their hands on the saddle or a guiding hand on your back, helping you along. You may have taken quite a few tumbles, picked up some cuts and bruises along the way, before that habit stuck and became a part of your subconscious, hence the phrase “You never forget how to ride a bike”. Of course it's a combination of feelings and movements called “sensory-motor memories” and although it can be quite hard to re-learn a different way of thinking and moving, it can be done through hypnosis.

Through Hypnosis, the therapist can access your subconscious mind by helping you to relax and by showing you how to achieve that relaxed state on your own, using various techniques and using mp3 self-hypnosis recordings.

What happens in a Hypnotherapy Session?

  • At the initial consultation I will spend anything between 15-20 minutes with you just talking to you about what might be troubling you in your life right now that you need help with.
  • I will then often use something called a progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) which is simply to focus on relaxing each part of your body.
  • After this we will then use something called a deepener which is simply a script to allow you to relax even deeper into the Alpha or Theta state (depending on each person's ability to totally relax).
  • Once you are in a relaxed state this is where the therapeutic suggestion happens, where I assist in the change that you want to make in your life.
  • Finally the Re-orientation is the closing of the script to bring you back to full awareness.

In future sessions the initial talk and PMR can be shortened or skipped to allow for a more in-depth therapeutic session to take place. Hypnosis is a completely natural state and can create positive changes in your mental, emotional and physical state. It cannot make you do anything that you do not want to do or you morally object to. You cannot get stuck in hypnosis and you can awake any time you choose to.

How does it work and how long does it last?

During the therapeutic part of the script, new behaviours, ways of thinking or habits will be suggested to you and these can last anywhere between two days to two weeks, hence why often a few appointments are necessary for the new behaviour replace the old and for it to become a permanent, new habit in your subconscious. For example if a problem is weight gain due to over-snacking on sweet foods, hypnosis would empower you to stop this activity for a period of time after each session.
How long this takes really depends on a few things -:
  • How motivated you are to change. You need to be at least 8/10 and preferably as close to 10/10 as possible to WANT to change your habit, behaviour or be free from a phobia, stress or anxiety.
  • How well we communicate and work well together
  • How relaxed you can become and give into the process of Hypnosis
  • The complexity and type of issue you need help with
  • How strong your current self-beliefs are around the issue
  • Whether there is a deeper seated issue that requires addressing

So there are a few factors and it varies between each person how long the process of change takes but relief should be fairly instant and I've seen changes within a 45 minute initial session that stick so it's really up to you.
